VALENTINE’S HEART BIRD FEEDER
At my children’s school, Valentine’s treats cannot be sweets, so this year I decided to make heart shaped bird feeders. This inexpensive and darling project is something birds will love too. You can use a variety of different shapes based on the holiday. I always wrap my bird feeders in a small vellum bag and tie with a pretty ribbon and hangtag. For the hangtags on this project, I used watercolor paper to create a marble/ tie dye background that once dry, kids can write their classmates names on.
INGREDIENTS
2 cups mixed birdseed
2 packages no flavor gelatin
½ cup of water
Heart shape cookie cutter
Non-stick cooking spray
A chopstick – to form the ribbon hole
Ribbon or Twine
DIRECTIONS
Bring ½ cup of water to a slow boil on the stove. Add in 2 packs of no-flavor gelatin and stir well to combine. Stir until gelatin is dissolved and then remove from heat. Let cool for a minute or two.
Add in 2 cups of birdseed and stir to mix well and coat all of the birdseed. Spray the cookie cutter with nonstick spray and place cookie cutters on parchment paper. Scoop birdseed mixture into the cutter, pressing down firmly with the back of the spoon.
Once full, insert the chopstick where you would like the hole for the ribbon to be. Gently pull the chopstick out and pop the bird feeder out of the cookie cutter.
Place on parchment and repeat. I let them cure overnight so they are solid and more durable before I tie on the twine.
Hang from a branch and wait for the birds to come.
